The Minister of the Interior of the Generalitat, Joan Ignasi Elena, reiterated the need to authorize a police escort for the former president and now Junts+Puigdemont candidate in the 12M Catalan elections, Carles Puigdemont.

In a letter addressed to the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, this Wednesday, Elena expressed that “periodically” they requested the activation of the protection service of Puigdemont, as indicated in the law that regulates the Statute of the ‘Former Presidents of the Generalitat of Catalonia, although until now this has not been authorized.

“At this moment, a few weeks before the elections to the Parliament of Catalonia, the figure of the former president regains particular public importance by being designated candidate, while it was announced that part of his electoral campaign would take place in a few kilometers from Catalonia.” Elena added.

Being a candidate affects his “public projection and, therefore, his security”, expressed the councilor, who asked Marlaska to give the necessary instructions for the effective exercise of the service.

“Knowing that given that this is a service that will likely be provided overseas, your ministry must route the request sent through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for which I request, once again, that the request is processed as quickly as possible,” said Elena. argued.

In addition, he demanded that the corresponding authorities be informed “favorably” and that the procedures for transferring regulatory weapons to the agents who must provide the service be facilitated.
