“We are going to review all the screws. The vents, the workers, everything,” he said. Miguel Angel Hernández, Brother Lieutenant Superior of the Brotherhood of Gitanos. It’s 9:30 p.m. last Tuesday the 19th. Miguel Angel and about twenty brothers we find others in the Church of Our Lady of Carmen and San Luis Obispo, next to the lively Preciados street. The temple has been empty since the last mass, that of Saint Joseph. But now it is filled with brothers again. Among them is Fernando, that, that very morning, starts his shift at 4:30 p.m. It is also Diego, who shows us the office warehouse of the brotherhood, in the same parish. There, he shows us the crosses that the penitents will carry. And in the same room, there are the candles that will go on the steps, so coveted once the procession is over. “People are buying them earlier. “There’s not even one left,” says the young man. Meanwhile, in the next room, Isabel irons the tunics of the Nazarenes and the Costaleros. From above the temple you can see the central courtyard. The benches on which the faithful recently sat have been moved. You have to get to work. And two images await your focus: Our Father Jesus of Health and Most Holy Mary of Sorrows. As happens every day before the procession, the brothers will finish their work between three and four in the morning.

Since 2000

If time permits – a subject that the brothers generally avoid even discussing on previous days –, today Holy Wednesday, from 8:30 p.m., Madrid residents will be able to see Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Salud and María Santísima de las Angustias being treated. Or, as it is commonly called, the Procession of the Gitanos. The transition from youth to seniority occurs more quickly than our senses perceive. And the truth is that this brotherhood, which he treated for the first time in 2000, is today one of the essentials of Madrid’s Holy Week. Today she will share the spotlight with that of the Holy Christ of the Three Falls and Our Lady of Hope, which, in her case, will begin at 7:45 p.m. in the Parish of Santiago and San Juan Bautista.

“These are days of great emotion. It is the culmination of an entire year of work. And it’s an effort. But the love for your brotherhood, which is alive 365 days a year, puts you at ease and makes you hope for the next day.” Just in front of the Col Vierge, image created by Ángel Rengel López in 1998 –like that of Jesús de la Salud– Miguel Ángel Hernández tells us how the journey of the Gitanos began in Madrid. Of Sevillian origin but raised in Madrid, the current lieutenant older brother He frequently visited the Andalusian capital with his parents When I was small. A holy week, he saw pass Christ of Health “on the move” in the streets of Seville. “It must be calling to you,” he confesses.accompanied in the parish by his two children.

Born in Madrid in the mid-1990s on the initiative of the Brotherhood of Gypsies of Seville – so called because it was founded by members of this ethnic group in the mid-18th century – this group today has 800 members in our city. Since Antonio Antúnez was elected the first Big Brother, he has continued to grow. “It’s already a significant volume. All Madrid residents who wish to join have their doors open,” says Miguel Ángel.

Church under construction

To make things even more difficult, the work they carried out in the previous days took place in a parish which is currently in the midst of reform. This temple has existed for almost four centuries and has suffered many injuries: the looting, the fires, the confiscation decrees, the demolition of the convent, occupation during the civil war… Its renovation includes two phases: in the first, started in 2022a solution was provided to the structural pathologies of the transept, as well as the recovery of the vaults and cornices; in the second, in progress, The restoration and air conditioning of the transept, the conditioning of the pavement, as well as various works in the sacristy and the front sacristy are currently being carried out. The members of the brotherhood and the faithful strongly hope that the Church appears renewed again.

For this year, there are several new features. The first concerns all the processions which, like that of Los Gitanos, take place in the center of Madrid: it will modify its route to pass in front of the Puerta del Sol, which becomes “a meeting point between brotherhoods”. On the other hand, the Cristo de la Salud will wear a new tunic, offered by a sister who dresses herself, while His cross will bear new turns, made for the occasion by Enrique Lobo Lozano, “a great maker of images of tree crosses”. For its part, the Virgin of Angustias will begin a rosary, offered by a family of the brotherhood.

We, journalists, and we sing the mea culpa from here, only remember the brotherhoods during those days. However, and as Miguel Ángel told us, the remaining 51 weeks of the year are very active. “The brotherhood offers many special moments for the brother, but also for the parishioner,” he says. “There are two very important acts. The Triduum, in honor of María Santísima de las Angustias, and the Quinario, in honor of Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Salud. This Triduum and this Quinary end respectively with a main function and a solemn function. These are very special days for us: the days of worship of our images,” describes Michelangelo. In addition to these celebrations, the brothers “They do excursions, visits, we have rural cohabitation, we are in San Isidro… We always try to keep the brotherhood alive,” he adds.

In addition to the DIY work of these days, in the previous weeks the brotherhood, which currently has Ricardo Moreno Fernández as Big Brother, was “trained” for the procession in an industrial zone in the Villaverde neighborhood. Rehearsals have started last January, “one Sunday yes and another Sunday”. “We are looking for places where the costaleros “bare their necks”. And most importantly, we correct the errors so that they do not happen again at the Station of Penance.

Between the incumbents and their replacements, up to seventy people will carry the two images, grouped into two groups. “The starters are no better than the substitutes,” explains Miguel Ángel. “They are all the same. It depends on the rehearsals, the commitment, many other things… And, from there, you see which people make the journey. They all have a heart that doesn’t fit in their chest. We could be better or worse, but deep down, no one beats them. And when they go out and enter, they put all their emotion into ensuring that the Virgin of Sorrows enters and leaves as she must enter.

It is very difficult to explain what a costalero feels during these days, but Miguel Ángel sums it up: “When you are one step away from Holy Week carrying an image… We see the Virgin there. Channel the path to get there.
